Concept Art

I have been working on improving my artistic skills lately. This is some concept art I have been experimenting with that may end up being the title screen or background for the lobby.

I know this doesn't match the in-game art, but neither do most classic arcade games. The original Asteroids cover art looks nothing like the game, but is still relevant. Since Nexus has the classic arcade look and feel I may go with a similar approach. If it detracts from the game play or causes confusion, however, it's out.

  1. Question (though I think it may be better to ask on FB so we have some feed back as well) - should we keep the ship in "line art", or should we go all the way like most arcade covers and depict an "actual" ship? Just mere aesthetics than confusion.

  2. I think that it doesn't really matter as long as the final result looks uniform and complete. Right now the ship doesn't quite match with the rest of the scenery so I'll have to modify the ship or background until it all matches fluidly.

I like the idea of realism on the cover because it helps give it that "classic" look, but I think a lot of people may not understand when they first play the game. They may be expecting different graphics or gameplay when they start playing. So I think the direction I'll go towards is a mix of both: keep the realistic perspective but make the graphics closer to the actual game.

What do you think about all this?

  3. why not at a tron effect to the game (er i meant the neon glowy kind of effect)kinda gives it the old wormhole look(i apologize, if im mistaken)

  4. Actually wormhole didn't have any glow effects on the shapes, here's an image that shows some gameplay (taken from the facebook group): http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/140_542861993108_5706311_36319944_5416_n.jpg

I do think the effect could make the objects look more appealing, but the main reason I haven't explored this is because it can make the gameplay laggy. There can be a lot of objects on the field at the same time and adding the glow gradients can really cause Flash to drop the FPS, which is unacceptable in a game like this.
